Building Codes in Ontario

This is an online course that involves approximately 25 hours of online learning (including study time) with no classroom time. For those who are new to Building Codes, additional study time will be needed.

Interpret and apply the Building Code with confidence. Along with a focus on Part 9 (Housing and Small Buildings) and Part 12 (Resource Conservation) of the Code, you will explore related standards and processes relating to residential construction.

Understand what the Building Codes govern

Building Code requirements relating to:

    • Soil bearing capacity and problematic soil conditions
    • Structural materials and methods of assembly to reduce damage from movement
    • The building envelope, keeping the weather out, and resolving simple issues
    • Sound transmission into residential units and resolving simple problems
    • Heating and ventilation systems controlling indoor air quality
    • Septic Systems principles, design and operation
    • Installation of interior finishes 

Course availability:  Online learning allows you to work at your own pace from the comfort of your own computer any time of the day or night. 

Timeframes:  You will have access to the course for three months from the date of course registration to complete the online education.  Extensions can be purchased if additional time is required. 

Tuition: The tuition for this course includes the online education and an electronic copy of the course manual.  You will need  to obtain a paper copy of the 2012 Ontario Building Code - 2 Volume Compendium to reference during the course and for the open book exam.  Click here for further details on where to obtain a copy of the 2012 Ontario Building Code.  The Building Code is revised periodically.  This course is based on the 2012 Building Code which became effective January 1, 2014, and the changes to the Building Codes and Supplementary Standards that become effective on January 1, 2015 and will not contain any revisions that occur after January 1, 2015.

Passing grade:  The passing grade is 70%.

Final Exam - Tarion Approved Assessment

To assess your understanding of the course content, the final exams for Tarion approved courses are administered by Algonquin College at independent testing locations throughout the province.

The exam for Building Codes in Ontario is open book in a multiple choice, multiple answer and true/false format.

When you are close to completing the online course, visit  and select "Tarion" on the top menu bar of the page to book and purchase your final exam at a location near you. 

Algonquin College will release your exam results directly to you through email (the same email you registered with for the assessment).   You will receive your exam results in approximately two weeks after completing the assessment.
